EPIC Professional Development Conference 2024

Course description: Join us for an exciting journey into the world of hidden mathematics! Ever wondered how much math we use in our daily lives? Haekyoung Choi earned her master’s degree in Educational Technology and Mathematics at TAMU-CC and is an instructor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Nene Coulibaly has a master's degree in Applied Math, Accounting, and MBA. He has been working at TAMU-CC since 2011 as a Math instructor.

Archana Krishnagiri is a dedicated math instructor with a master’s degree in Mathematics from Texas A&M University. She has brought more than 10 years of experience in teaching various math courses at TAMU-CC. 

Course description: As organizations make remote and flexible arrangements a permanent part of the work environment, some leaders worry: “How do I know if my employees are really working?” This training will cover new dynamics of leadership in this changing environment, and discuss whether the question above is really the best one for you to be asking yourself (hint, it’s not). This session will discuss common concerns in the remote environment including miscommunication, inefficient meetings and the value of trust. Key skills include managing communications, establishing meeting guidelines and identifying workplace behaviors that build, sustain, or break trust.

Course description: Qigong is an ancient practice that centers on the mind, body, and spirit to improve mental and physical health by integrating movement, breathing technique, self-massage, and focused intent. In this session, attendees will learn about Qigong and how it can be used to promote well-being and resilience. Attendees will take part in a short Qigong practice and should wear comfortable clothing that will not restrict movement if possible.

Chimene (Jimena) Burnett teaches UNIV 1101 and 1102 in the TAMU-CC Learning Communities Program, Department of Interdisciplinary Studies in the College of Liberal Arts.

Course description: In this presentation, we will discuss the ADA to better understand the law and how it applies at each stage of the employment process. We will also discuss best practices for protections and compliance in the workplace.

Presenters: Marina Guerra & Tonya Lennox

Tonya Lennox is the Outreach and Education Coordinator in the EEOC Dallas District Office. She began her federal career as a law enforcement officer with the U.S. Marshals Services; the Federal Bureau of Prisons and served in human resource management at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs where she was created programs with the EEO management team. Lennox began her twenty-plus-year career with the EEOC as an investigator in the Little Rock Area Office, senior investigator in the Richmond, Virginia, and Oklahoma City Area Office. She specialized in investigating high-profile, class action discrimination cases and was chosen to train her peers and shortly had a proven record as a highly rated EEOC speaker. In 2014, she was promoted as a member of the Enforcement management team in Charlotte District Office’s Raleigh Area Office. In January 2022, she was appointed as Outreach and Education Coordinator for the Philadelphia District Office before coming to Texas. She is a graduate of both the University of Guam in the Marianas Islands, where she studied Criminal Justice, and the Southern Nazarene University in Oklahoma, receiving her B.S. degree in Human Resource Management.
   
Marina Guerra is an Outreach and Education Coordinator with the EEOC Houston District Office. Originally from Corpus Christi, Texas, she attended Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and graduated with honors, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. She began her career as an investigator with the Houston District Office in 1999. Hired through a Scholastic Achievement program she worked as an Investigator from 1999 through 2014 when she was promoted to a supervisory position. Guerra held her supervisory position until 2020, when she was promoted to her current OEC position. She is very passionate about the work she does and is especially honored to carry out the mission of the EEOC daily.

Presenter: Melissa Gibson-Asbury

Melissa Asbury has worked in the IT field for over 27 years and is currently the Director of IT Services, overseeing the IT Business Services, Software/Hardware acquisition process, and ServiceNow platform owner. A passionate advocate for excellent customer service and IT process improvements. She holds a BA in Business Administration, Management Information Systems from Sam Houston State University and is a certified in PMP and OCM.

Course description: Learn how to get the most out of the university's services portal. The presentation will include a demo of the Service Portal, tips on how to track your requests, search for FAQs and How To's to get timely responses to your questions.

Dr. Gloria L. Dávila has been with TAMU-CC for over 25 years, serving in various IT roles and currently as the IT Service Desk Manager. She has also contributed to K-12 IT departments within Texas ISDs. Gloria is passionate about technology and its potential to advance knowledge and create efficiencies. She especially enjoys sharing her expertise and empowering others to leverage technology for business, educational, and personal goals. Gloria holds a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership from TAMU-CC.

Course description: Has anyone ever said your meetings should be emails? In this session, I'll show you some little-known features that can help make your meetings less of a snoozefest and more informative and interactive.

Presenter: Cynthia Farias

Cynthia Farias is the Educational Technologist for DLAI. She's been in Distance/Digital Learning for almost 30 years. Her main goal is to help faculty teach without feeling like the technology is a burden or a stumbling block.

Course description: Memes are now widely recognized as emblems of cultural moments, reflecting and shaping the collective mindset by encapsulating cultural trends, emotions, and conflicts. While they are sometimes benign conveyances of humor and/or helpful propagators of ideas, they also often thrive on tribalism, reinforcing echo chambers and in-group solidarity while mocking out-groups, intensifying social divisions and polarization. By simplifying complex ideas into shareable content, memes not only mirror but also influence collective consciousness, making them a powerful force in shaping the digital zeitgeist.

Dr. David Gurney (he/him) is a Professor of Media Arts in the Department of Communication and Media at TAMU-CC. His research is primarily in critical media studies and focuses on emergent forms of digital and social media, various manifestations of humor in media, and transmedia branding strategies. He served as Chair of the Department of Communication and Media from 2016-2022 and currently serves as the Associate Director for the School of Arts, Media, and Communication.

Course description: Worried that your social skills may have atrophied lately? Or just interested in some helpful tools for having good conversations? Then this is the session for you! This workshop reviews how to handle those awkward social interactions in which you’re not sure how to break the ice and how to respond to someone else’s efforts to do the same.

Course description: This course provides an overview of compliance with the Texas Public Information Act, including best practices, recent changes to the law, your role in helping the university respond, and categories of information that should be flagged for review.

Presenter: Brooks Moore

Brooks Moore is Deputy General Counsel, serves as managing counsel for the Governance practice area, and oversees the TAMU System’s Policy Office. His governance practice focuses on the Public Information Act, Open Meetings Act, System policies and regulations, conflicts of interest/ethics, legislation, state and federal relations, and records management. He also serves as the public information officer for the System Offices and is the System records management officer. Mr. Moore regularly provides client education training sessions on topics such as open records, FERPA, and records management.

Course description: In this interactive session, you'll learn to analyze your audience's needs and interests to effectively tailor your content for maximum impact. You'll also explore how to simplify complex information and present it in a visually engaging manner while incorporating interactive elements to enhance audience participation. Finally, you’ll practice using effective delivery techniques and crafting strong conclusions that leave your audience with clear takeaways and actionable steps.

Lauran Guerra is an Senior Instructional Designer for Digital Learning and Academic Innovations (DLAI). Lauran is an alumna of TAMU-CC and has a Master of Science in Educational Technology. She has worked for over 10 years providing faculty and staff support for various campus technologies and digital strategies. Her special interests include multimedia production and accessibility.

Course description: Grit is mental toughness. Grit is the ability to persevere to achieve difficult long-term goals. Grit is strongly associated with success in personal and professional life. Grit involves several elements: passion and purpose, development of habits and coping with unpleasant emotions such as fear, discouragement or embarrassment. This course will examine the nature of grit and identify specific methods for developing it.

Course description: Using methods and examples from her book titled, "Closest Alligator to the Boat: How College Students Can Get an 'A' in Class and Life," and from her experiences at TAMU-CC, Dr. Epley Sanders will provide concrete suggestions for embedding professional and personal development into course syllabi, structures, lesson plans, and assessments to facilitate applied student learning, preparations for students' future careers, and skills building for personal well-being and growth.

Dr. Epley Sanders is a professor in the Political Science Program at TAMU-CC. She graduated from the University of Michigan with an M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science. As a political scientist, Dr. Epley Sanders uses qualitative and quantitative methods to study the politics of "identity" with the aim of deepening and advancing our existing knowledge about what constitutes "identity," its influences in our lives, and why identity matters for us personally, professionally, and politically.

Course description: This presentation explores emerging trends and innovative solutions in assistive technology for higher education. We will discuss how AI, accessible digital materials, and inclusive classroom design can create more equitable learning environments for students with disabilities.

Jennifer Bradley, Assistant Director of Disability Services at TAMU-CC, has dedicated 16 years to serving students with disabilities. With a Master's in Special Education and a passion for assistive technology, she has been empowering individuals since 1993. Her commitment to accessibility and inclusivity has led to innovative strategies that have transformed the lives of countless people with disabilities.

Gillian Benedetti is a Disability Services Coordinator at TAMU-CC. She is also a doctoral candidate, and her current research is in the disproportionate representation of minoritized populations in special education. Gillian has worked in the field of education for 20 years as a public-school educator, university faculty instructor, and university student affairs professional.

Course description: Step Up! Bystander Intervention Training is a fun and engaging training where participants will have the opportunity to learn about different helping behaviors that they can engage in during both emergent and non-emergent situations!

Presenter: Michael La Torre

Michael La Torre is the Assistant Dean of Students for Conduct & Advocacy at TAMU-CC. He has served Islander students for almost 8 years and has worked in student conduct for 12 years. He has two Master's Degrees, one in Legal Studies from West Virginia University and one from Wright State University in Student Affairs in Higher Education. He graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, Communications, and English. He is currently in the third year of his doctoral degree at TAMU-CC in Educational Leadership.

Course description: Despite interventions to prevent workplace bullying and incivility, it persists across organizations worldwide. Affecting both men and women, research indicates persistent psychological distress from workplace bullying and incivility hinders employees’ ability to perform and significantly contributes to turnover. We discuss Management Best Practices to build trust, prevent bullying and incivility, and be a supportive ally in the workplace.

Presenter: Dr. Sandra DeGrassi & Dr. Katherine Roberto

Dr. Sandra DeGrassi is an Assistant Professor of Management at TAMU-CC. She received her BBA in Finance from The University of Texas-Austin, and her PhD in Management from Texas A&M University in College Station. Her teaching and research interests focus on Human Resource Management topics including recruitment, selection, ethics, diversity, and management education. She has been published in top journals such as the Journal of Applied Psychology, the Journal of Organizational Behavior, the Journal of Management Education, and the Journal of Business Ethics.

Dr. Katherine J. Roberto (PhD, University of Texas at Arlington) is an Associate Professor of Management and Associate Dean of Faculty Success and Accreditation at TAMU-CC. Before earning her doctorate, she worked in the field of Human Resources. Her primary areas of research are diversity, stereotyping, and decision making regarding the attraction, selection, and retention of employees.

Course description: This presentation will showcase how to effectively use Microsoft Teams for group management, collaboration, document sharing and communication through announcements, group chats and private messages.

Dr. Rinki Suryavanshi is the Instructional Design - Team Lead for the Digital Learning and Academic Innovation at TAMU-CC. She holds a Ph.D. in Instructional Systems and Learning Technologies from Florida State University. Her research interest is in designs for learning and human performance technologies. Dr. Suryavanshi is a certified Quality Matters Peer-Reviewer and QM face-face Course Facilitator, and she loves to provide support to faculty in designing engaging courses for the learners.

Derrik Hiatt is Interim Dean of University Libraries and the University Records Officer. He may not have all the answers, but as a librarian he knows how to look them up!

Course description: It seems that more than ever, people are living busy, chaotic lives that often leave them feeling overwhelmed and out of control. Between work, parental responsibilities, community involvement, exercise, hobbies, friendships, family responsibilities and more, sometimes it feels as if keeping track of it all is just impossible. Fortunately, there are many tools available to help people gain control, though sometimes sorting through what’s available can add what seems like even more chaos to life. Smartphones, day planners, alarms, e-mail systems, priority grids, voice mail systems, note pads, to-do lists, contact lists, address books, folders, file cabinets and more—the purpose of this session is to help you sort through the tools available to help you organize your life and pick the ones that will work for you.

Course description: This presentation will demonstrate how to use AI for creation, refinement, and editing of graphics. The presenter will also show where you can find free image and font resources for the ultimate goal of creating graphics for use in your event promotions.

Presenter: Andrea Hempstead

Andrea Hempstead is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design at TAMU-CC. She received her BS in Graphic Design from North Carolina State University School of Design, MBA from LeMoyne College and MFA in Graphic Design from Marywood University. Hempstead has taught graphic design since 2010. As an instructor, Professor Hempstead focuses on concept, function and the user experience. Before her role as a full-time instructor, she spent 11 years working as a web designer, UI/UX consultant, advertising and publication designer. In her creative works, Hempstead explores the intersection of visual signifiers, language, and interpretation. She creates experiences that invite connection, engagement, and reaction by provoking physical, emotional, and cerebral interactions. Her recent creative work has focused on visual poetry, posters for social justice, paper tessellations as sculpture, and pop-up engineering. Her client work centers around non-profits. Hempstead’s research examines the roles of agency, identity and empathy in the design thinking process as well as their impact in the classroom.

Course description: Introduction to the Course Library tool and how faculty can use it to assemble resources for their students. Faculty will learn how to add Course Library to their course shell in Canvas and the basic capabilities of the tool. I am hoping to also recruit a faculty member to talk about their perspective on using Course Library in their classes.

Presenter: Lisa Louis

Lisa Louis is Director of User and Research Services at TAMU-CC’s Bell Library. She has an MLS and a Masters in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. During her 30+ years as a professional librarian she has worked in a variety of roles in academic, public, and law libraries. In her current position, she manages Access Services, reference, instruction, student success, and scholarly communication services, and serves on the library’s OER Working Group. For fun, she knits and crochets, plays World of Warcraft, and hangs out with her husband Jason and dog Thea.

Presenter: Dr. Scott Pool

Dr. Pool has been on faculty at TAMU-CC since 2016, and has been teaching Music Appreciation for nearly 30 years. In addition to a successful career as an internationally recognized musician, Dr. Pool's passion for meaning in music has led to many exciting discoveries in the classroom. He is the author of "Understanding and Enjoying Music".

Course description: During my presentation, I will provide insight into our campus licensing processes, emphasizing the importance of creating a consistent university brand image that is both safe and welcoming to our campus community. I will also offer a step-by-step walkthrough of our promotional item ordering procedure. Finally, I will encourage our faculty and staff to be strong advocates for our university by adhering to our licensing procedures and reporting any infringements when they occur.

Lacey Loomis is the Licensing and Trademark Coordinator at TAMU-CC. Shortly after earning her bachelor's degree in communications from Texas A&M University-College Station, she joined the Islander community in the Marketing and Communications department. With extensive experience in various marketing roles, Lacey understands the importance of brand image and is excited to contribute to the ongoing safe and welcoming reputation of the Island University.

Course description: Certain individuals appear to succeed against all odds. Despite severe hardships such as living through war, witnessing the death of a loved one, having a chronic illness, being a victim of abuse or dealing with unemployment, certain people not only adapt but actually thrive. These people possess a quality known as “resilience.” This workshop will examine the characteristics of resilience and discover ways to introduce greater resilience into our lives.

We'll then explore how to infuse these characters with movement and personality, transforming them into dynamic actors within your film. Finally, learn the secrets of AI-powered lip-syncing, seamlessly matching dialogue to your character's animations for the most believable results. By the end of this presentation, attendees will have a strong grasp of these transformative AI tools and how to implement them for compelling character-driven stories.

Presenter: John Darbonne

John Darbonne has been a filmmaker since he first picked up an 8mm camera in high school. Demonstrating that he possessed the necessary skills to be a storyteller on the award-winning FIFTH WARD, John was tasked with serving as a ghostwriter in addition to cinematography. Since then, his role has often included writing. and editing. On the films that followed, such as COMPANION, WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD, and VANILLA, his role expanded to include serving as the lead editor, illustrating that John understands the narrative flow of features. John’s career has taken him all over the world. From the independent film scene in Houston, Texas, to the studio system in Los Angeles, John has thirty-three feature films to his credit, as well as hundreds of commercials, music videos, and corporate videos. His roles include writer, producer, director, cinematographer, and editor, and his client list includes Universal Pictures, Sony Pictures, National Lampoon, Intel, Sketchers, Lincoln Mercury, and Hyundai. He is deeply invested in the potential for AI in filmmaking and completed his certification in AI Filmmaking through Curious Refuge.

Carrie Coursey has been working for TAMU-CC since 2004. She serves as the Institutional Advancement event services manager and has over 28 years of event experience. In her current role she oversees Presidential and IA signature events and external community events. Carrie strives for event planning perfection. She believes that each event should be a positive reflection of the university.

Linda Copado Rincón has been an employee of TAMU-CC since February 2022. She has more than 15 years’ experience in coordinating events on a national, state and local level. Linda is the Events Coordinator II for Event Services and works with external community clients requesting to utilize facilities on our beautiful campus. Linda’s goal is always to provide a service of excellence to all our clients.

Ricardo Urdinaran is a 2018 TAMU-CC grad with a bachelors in English from New Jersey. With solid communication skills and a variety of talents, he joins Carrie and Linda as their Assistant with Event Services.

Sarina Garcia '20, '22, is a proud alumna of the Island University and currently serves as the Assistant Director of Donor Engagement where she collaborates to create unforgettable experiences that inspire visitors while highlighting all TAMU-CC has to offer. Her passion lies in showcasing the heart and spirit of our Island ensuring every interaction leaves a lasting impression on our alumni, community partners, donors, and friends.

Course description: This Export Control awareness session will take Islanders on a journey in which they must deduce clues on foreign activity scenarios to determine the best course of action, highlighting compliance and avoiding pitfalls along the way.

Wanese Butler has a dedicated career of public service through local, state, and federal agencies. Her 20+ years in compliance-related work includes TAMU-CC, EEOC, HUD, City of Corpus Christi, and various boards and commissions. Wanese is a TAMU-CC alumni who began working on campus in 2015 in the Employee Development and Compliance Services Department. She  then became the university’s Financial Conflict of Interest and Export Control Officer in the Office of Risk, Ethics, and Compliance.

Course description: Have you ever felt tired and sluggish at work? Do you notice tension in your neck and back pain in the middle of your workday? Spending many of our waking hours sitting at a desk can lead to consequences for our health. However, it can be difficult to find time to exercise! This training will discuss the importance of not being completely sedentary all day, and review practical, easy ways to take care of your body while working a desk job.

Missy Chapa is the University Registrar and your friendly FERPA Compliance Officer, who has been with the university for 20 years and is a proud alum. Her favorite academic items to discuss are policies and procedures, and any initiatives related to student success.

Cassandra Sanchez is the Assistant Registrar and enjoys FERPA conversations. She has been with the university for 7 years and is also a proud alum. Course description: Using The Resilience Toolkit framework as our guide, you will be invited to grow curious about where and how stress shows up for you and how you know whether it is helpful or harmful to you in the moment. We will explore introductory level learning around the natural stress & relaxation cycles of our human bodies (e.g., stress models) and you will be invited to try on approachable somatic practices to see if they feel supportive to reducing stress (or enhancing relaxation) in real time. You will regularly be offered choices throughout for enhancing your safety and comfort and will receive supportive witnessing and gentle guidance as we practice together.

Presenter: Genevieve Wrenne Turner

Genevieve Wrenne Turner (“Wrenne”) is an artist, space holder, Project Manager at TAMU-CC for the Office of Student Success, and Certified Facilitator of The Resilience Toolkit. She is passionate about transforming spaces (of all kinds) and supporting individuals and communities in their unique journeys to empowering presence, spaciousness, connection, healing, and joy.

Course description: Pollen exposure in early life is shown to be associated with asthma and allergy. DNA methylation (DNAm), an epigenetic marker, potentially reacts to pollen. However, the role of DNAm between prenatal pollen exposure and childhood asthma and rhinitis is unknown.

Presenter: Dr. Rajesh Melaram

Dr. Rajesh Melaram is a trained Epidemiologist with experience in environmental, epigenetic, and epidemiological studies. He received his PhD in Public Health from Walden University and his MS in Biology from the University of South Florida. His current research focuses on pollen exposures in early life and childhood allergic diseases. Other research interests of his include the epidemiology and toxicology of freshwater microcystins and the potential health risks of using contaminated harmful algal bloom water for agricultural irrigation.  

Course description: Numerous life skills are not included in academic curriculum, yet faculty and staff are seen as good resources for students on life skills. We'll explore some of these information gaps and identify resources. Develop yourself to be an accurate and trusted resource. Help our students and each other flourish!

Dr. Gloria L. Dávila has been with TAMU-CC for over 25 years, serving in various IT roles and currently as the IT Service Desk Manager. She has also contributed to K-12 IT departments within Texas ISDs. Gloria is passionate about technology and its potential to advance knowledge and create efficiencies. She especially enjoys sharing her expertise and empowering others to leverage technology for business, educational, and personal goals. Gloria holds a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership from TAMU-CC.

Course description: Worries are thoughts we have about the future that generate fear. They arrive in the form of a “what if?” and generate dire warnings about terrible consequences that await us. Unfortunately, these warnings we give ourselves are generally overblown and focused on hypothetical problems that probably won’t happen. Chronic worry that begins to impact the quality of life becomes “anxiety” and well-intended suggestions to “stop worrying” or applying common stress management techniques are mostly ineffective. This training will address how worry habits develop and methods of intervening with worry and anxiety.
