State of Texas Hazlewood Act Exemption
A Veteran must meet all the eligibility requirements as drawn from the Hazlewood Act Statute and 40 Texas Administrative Code §461:
A Veteran must:
- At the time of entry into active duty of the U.S. Armed Forces, (DD Form 214 required) & (40 TAC §461.40)
- designated Texas as Home of Record;
- or entered the service in Texas;
- or was a Texas resident;
- Have received an honorable discharge or separation or a general discharge under honorable conditions as indicated on the Veteran’s Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty,
- Served at least 181 days of active duty service (excluding training);
- Currently reside in Texas; (40 TAC §461.40) & (40 TAC §461.70)
- Have no federal Veteran’s education benefits, or have no federal Veterans education benefits dedicated to the payment of tuition and fees only (such as Chapter 33 or 31; for term or semester enrolled that do not exceed the value of Hazlewood benefits;
- Not be in default on a student loan made or guaranteed by the State of Texas;
- Enroll in classes for which the college receives tax support (i.e., a course that does not depend solely on student tuition and fees to cover its cost), unless the college’s governing board has ruled to let Veterans receive the benefit while taking non-funded courses; and
- Meet the GPA requirement of the institution’s satisfactory academic progress policy in a degree or certificate program as determined by the institution’s financial aid policy and, as an undergraduate student, not be considered to have attempted an excessive amount of credit hours.

Provides qualified Veterans, Spouses, and Dependent Children with an education benefit of up to 150 hours of tuition exemption, including most fee charges, at public institutions of higher education in Texas. This does NOT include living expenses, books, or supply fees.

Payment for these charges need to be made or arranged with the Business Office.

This form is to be completed by Islander Students who are using Federal VA Education Benefits.
Eligible children between 18 and 23 years of age must submit a school enrollment certification letter confirming student status. This is required in order to continue eligibility for CHAMPVA benefits.
This form is to be completed by Islander Students who will enroll in courses and use their Federal VA Education Benefits at another institution.

Military Servicemembers
Prior to enrolling in classes, Servicemembers should consult with their respective branch of service or Educational Service Officer (ESO) for approval. Failure to do so may result in a denial of TA funding and a tuition debt with the university. For more information:

***The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) requires Military Transcripts for Student Veterans receiving VA Education Benefits to be submitted to the institution.***
This form is to be completed by Islander Students who are currently serving in the Armed Forces and are stationed in Texas. Military Servicemembers present in the State of Texas for training purposes are not eligible. Military Servicemembers, Spouses and eligible Dependents must be assigned or residing in Texas at the time of enrollment.
Readmission for Students Called to Military Duty
"Military Duty" means any activity of a Servicemember performing a duty under a lawful military order, including training.
Students who are called to Military Duty and must step away from classes for training or temporary duty during a long semester, or are unable to attend a long semester, are required to submit a Readmission application, along with a copy of orders. The copy of the orders will serve as a fee waiver for the application fee.
As long as the student left the university in good academic standing and is returning to the same major, readmission is granted most of the time. If the student did not leave in good standing or applies for a different major, the application will have to go through the regular review process.
Readmission for Students who need to do a Military Withdrawal due to Active Military Service
Information and instructions for students called to Active Military Service is available on the Admissions website.
Please note, upon your return, you are required to submit a Readmission application, along with a copy of orders. The copy of the orders will serve as a fee waiver for the application fee.

Withdrawal Due to Active Military Service
"Active Military Service" means state Active-Duty Service, federally funded state Active-Duty Service or federal Active-Duty Service. The term does not include service performed exclusively for training, such as basic combat training, advanced individual training, annual training, inactive duty training and special training periodically made available to Service Members.

Nueces County Veterans Services
